Effects of B2O3 additive on sintering behavior and microwave dielectric properties of LaAlO3-doped MgTiO3–CaTiO3 ceramics

Abstract

The effects of B2O3 additive on the phase formation, the microstructures and the microwave dielectric properties of 1.0 mol% LaAlO3-doped 0.95MgTiO3–0.05CaTiO3 ceramics were investigated. The B2O3 addition lowered the sintering temperature of 1.0 mol% LaAlO3-doped 0.95MgTiO3–0.05CaTiO3 ceramics effectively to 1125 °C due to the liquid-phase effect. The microwave dielectric properties were found to strongly correlate with the sintering temperature as well as the amount of B2O3 addition. According to the XRD patterns, the secondary phase CaLa4Ti4O15 formed with more than 2 wt% B2O3 addition, which decreased the dielectric constant but promoted the Q × f value of the ceramics. With 3 wt% B2O3 addition, a maximum Q × f of 57,000 GHz (at 8 GHz) associated with a dielectric constant of 20.3 and a τ f value of −7.2 × 10−6/°C was achieved for the samples sintered at 1125 °C for 4 h.
