Enhanced microwave absorption capabilities of Ni microspheres after coating with SnO2 nanoparticles

Abstract

Ni microspheres were prepared by a solvothermal reduction method, and then coated by SnO2 nanoparticles to form core–shell structured Ni/SnO2 composite microspheres. The microstructure and electromagnetic properties of the samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, energy disperse X-ray spectrometry and a network analyzer. The Ni/SnO2 composite microspheres show better microwave absorption property than that of Ni microspheres. A minimal reflection loss as low as −21.7 dB was observed at 8.6 GHz with the thickness of 3 mm. The enhanced microwave absorption performances of Ni/SnO2 composite microspheres can be attributed to good electromagnetic impedance match, geometrical factors, and unique core–shell structure. Moreover, the efficient complementarities between magnetic loss and dielectric loss can also contribute to the microwave absorption.
