Production Engineering developed as a separate discipline within Engineering from 1920. It has two main functions concerned with manufacturing and with processes. The manufacturing or production function seeks to improve knowledge of the management of an activity. The production process method is devoted to the selection and modification of the processes and procedures. Recent years have shown a growth in automatic production and the replacement of some human skills with machines.
