Influence of sheet thickness on mechanical behaviors of the clinched joints produced by single-point butt clinching process

Abstract

A novel single-point butt clinching process which is suitable for joining different thicknesses of the aluminum alloy sheets was proposed in this study. This process contributed to increasing the joining efficiency and simplifying the procedures of the mechanical clinching process. The 3.0 mm, 2.5 mm, 2.0 mm, and 1.5 mm thicknesses of the AA 5052 sheets were employed to produce the single-point butt joints. Moreover, geometrical parameters of the mechanical interlock, static strength, material flow, energy absorption, and failure mode were analyzed after the mechanical clinching process. The analysis of experimental results showed that the static strength of a single-point butt joint depends on the strength of the mechanical interlock located on the thinner side of the joined sheets. In addition, the single-point butt joints produced by different thicknesses of the joined sheet have different joint stiffness. And the thickness of the joined sheets on the side with the lower mechanical interlock strength determined the stiffness of the single-point butt joint. As for energy absorption, if the thickness of the joined sheet on one side is constant, the energy absorption of the single-point butt joint is proportional to the thickness of the joined sheet on the other side. The failure modes of all the single-point butt joints made by AA5052 sheets with different thicknesses are the neck fracture in this work. The conclusions of this paper provide the possibility to use the single-point butt clinching process for realizing the reliable joining of aluminum alloy sheets with different thicknesses.
