Abstract

This study traces the early, rapid internationalization of small, young technology enterprises (SYTEs) to the interaction between industry dynamism and resource constraints. The evidence collected in this study shows that industry dynamism drives the speed of the internationalization and resource constraints inhibit it. Niche and strategic alliance strategies are found to mediate or moderate the relationships among resource constraints, industry dynamism and the speed. These mechanisms have important managerial implications.

Footnotes
1
According to China’s NDRC (National Development and Reform Commission), STEs already account for 60% of exports of technology products in the middle of the 2000s in China.

2
Other manufacturing includes a small number of firms in life science and information and communications technology industries.

3
The level of improvement in the correlation index did not exceed 0.004.

4
They also support our previous finding of good discriminant validity, as the correlations among the four constructs are rather small and not significant.

5
Because of space limit, we did not include the models that show the effects of both predictor moderator variables (before their interaction terms were introduced).

6
The precondition for the occurrence of a mediating effect is that the independent variable (i.e., resource constraints) has a significant effect on the moderator variable (i.e., niche operation). The result shows that the resource constraints variable is positive and significant (β = 0.0921, p < 0.05).

7
We also tested the precondition of the mediating effect by regressing resource constraints (independent variable) on strategic alliances (moderator variable). The coefficient for the ‘resource constraints’ variable is positive and significant at the 0.01 level (β = 0.1092).

8
In testing the combined mediation effect, we also followed the same procedure by regressing resource constraints (independent variable) on the joint moderator variable. The coefficient for the ‘resource constraints’ variable is positive and significant at the 0.05 level (β = 0.0951).
