Alongside digitization, connected vehicles, and automated driving, the focus of attention among research and development specialists at carmakers and suppliers is on alternative powertrains. As part of this process, the German automotive industry is following an approach that is open to all technologies. In addition to the further optimization of modern and efficient internal combustion engines, this includes electric mobility, carbon-neutral synthetic fuels, hydrogen, and natural gas engines. Only by having a broad range of powertrain types and fuels will it be possible to meet the EU Commission's ambitious targets on CO2 emissions. This approach is based on the diversified strategy that the German automotive industry has been pursuing for years.
