Process limitations of 3D printing model rock

Abstract

A 3D binder jet printer was used to fabricate model sandstone with increasing amounts of binder volume fraction. The model sandstone was compared to natural sandstone via microscopic imaging and the morphology and binding features between sand grains was contrasted. It was observed that unconfined compressive strength of the model samples increased with binder volume fraction, but dimensional control was sacrificed. Such results indicate that there is a limited processing window of binder content which can be adjusted to tailor the mechanical response of additively manufactured model sandstone.
