Abstract

Service systems are configurations of resources, including actors, technology, and shared information, interacting to co-create value. The smallest service system focuses on an individual interacting with others, and the largest service system covers the worldwide economy. Nations, cities, corporations, business departments, or government agencies, all are service systems.

Footnotes
1
Following Vargo and Lusch (2004), for the purpose of this dissertation, the singular type of service is used, defined as “the application of specialized competences (knowledge and skills) through deeds, processes, and performances for the benefit of another entity or the entity itself” (ibid, p. 2). In this vein, Vargo and Lusch’s (2004) accentuate the interrelation of goods and services and refrain from placing emphasis on the differences among them.

Findings and contributions of subsequent studies will closely align with this structure, unless otherwise specified. To avoid redundancy, no explicit remark will be made hereafter.
