AVL selected a holistic design approach for the layout of a plug-in hybrid drivetrain covering all core components and, by doing so, managed to achieve the best possible efficiency combined with attractive production cost. The approach called Future Hybrid ultimately poses the question, how many gears are really necessary and whether it would be better to consider the number of driving modes instead of the number of gears, since their number is increasing due to the integrated electric motor even for a low number of gears, and thus be able to fulfil the requirements for a comfortable hybrid powertrain. …
