Abstract

Physical modeling and a numerical simulation are performed to study the effect of the form of the cross section of an extruded briquette (brex) on its mechanical strength. It is shown that brex of oval cross section subjected to pressure from a load applied along the minor axis (with a semi-axis ratio of 1:2) are almost twice as strong as brex having a circular cross section. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of the numerical method that was used.
