Abstract

Different aspects of the mechanical strength of brex (extruded briquettes) are studied. A finite-element modeling is performed of the fracture of long brex as they leave the die. A model is also constructed to describe the position of brex of oval cross section in a pile, the model making it possible to determine the distribution of the orientations of brex in the pile. Strength tests of brex specimens confirmed previous conclusions on the compressive strength of brex and the tensile splitting of oval brex. A relation is found that quantitatively links the consumption of brex with their compressive strength. Possible mechanisms for the fracture of solid and hollow brex are compared.
