Abstract

The article investigates the causal link between female labor supply and fertility in Turkey, a country with high labor informality. It employs an instrumental variable approach using twin births to address endogeneity issues. The study finds that higher fertility reduces mothers' labor force participation, hours worked, earnings, and job search intensity, with informally employed mothers being the first to drop out of the labor force. Fathers, on the other hand, increase their informal employment and reduce their reservation wages as family size increases. The paper also highlights the impact of fertility on job search methods and intensity for both men and women. The findings suggest that informal employment negatively affects women's labor market prospects, potentially feeding poverty traps and increasing economic inequality. The study contributes to the literature by providing new evidence on the causal effect of fertility on labor supply in a context with high informality and by showing how informal employment interacts with post-fertility labor market decisions of mothers and fathers.
