With its next generation of the V8 TDI engine, Audi is implementing a completely new engine design concept featuring sequential turbocharging in the inner V in combination with an electric powered compressor. The object of the development is to create a sporty V-TDI engine significantly superior to the previous Audi V8 TDI engine in terms of fuel efficiency, power and torque, delivering an agile, dynamic drivetrain concept for other sporty Audi diesel models in the premium segment. The key components in attaining are the sequential turbocharging concept with an electric powered compressor and a single-channel close-coupled exhaust gas cleaning system. The architecture and the turbocharging concept underlying the new V8 TDI engine were detailed in the first part of the article in MTZ 6. This second part details the combustion method, the calibration and the exhaust gas cleaning system. …
