Abstract

In management few subjects arise as much controversy as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), often described as moving issue bearing individual meanings for scientists as well as practitioners. The need for the professionalization of CSR, which is seen as essential requirement for making the concept useable as value-adding factor, stands in clear contrast to prevailing deficits and a lack of know-how on the part of practitioners in charge.
In light of those circumstances, a growing number of providers of further education offer seminars on how to implement CSR into corporate practice and existing structures. The contribution at hand examines the content and the suggested solutions they pass on to managers and employees of German-speaking companies.
Results show that most of the providers who strongly oriented themselves towards current business practice when planning their programs convey a broad understanding of corporate responsibility, illustrating all three components of social, environmental and economic sustainability. Approaching CSR as a means to increase corporate performance rather than choosing philanthropic or ethical perspectives on the issue, they agree on the fact that CSR must be part of corporate strategies, being organized at higher management levels assigning shares of responsibility to a variety of departments.
