The integration of a new technology into an existing base engine design is a major challenge. This is increasingly important as the number of new engine designs is limited due to the increased development focus on electrification of powertrains, often allowing only minor changes to already available base engines. The StepCom system developed by FEV and Hilite provides a design solution of the Variable Compression Ratio technology with minimal impact on the existing base engine design.
