Use of thermal, dynamic, and mechanical analysis for characterizing sol-gel nano-TiO2 and PP@TiO2 advanced materials

Abstract

In this paper, the challenge consists in the preparation of TiO2 by sol-gel process with supercritical drying of ethanol and reinforced the polypropylene matrix while retaining the thermal, mechanical properties and ensuring a good interface compatibility. The dynamic study results were used to analyze the wettability, the viscoelastic properties of PP. The effects of TiO2 nanopowder on the static mechanical behavior of the polypropylene were studied using tensile and Vickers microhardness tester. The obtained results revealed that, firstly, the TiO2 anatase sphere is composed of 20–30 nm nanoparticles with average grain size around 11.5 nm and high surface area (141 m2/g). Secondly, the use of 5Wt.%TiO2 appears to be an efficient and promising method of increasing degree of crystallinity, dynamic and static mechanical properties of the polypropylene matrix. Based on SEM and TEM studies, improved dispersion and hight interface compatibility was obtained between nano-TiO2 and polypropylene matrix.
