Abstract

The challenge of the twenty-first century is clean and safe water for the future generation. Due to increased industrialization and improper handling of industrial and domestic waste, water matrices are getting spoiled. Industrial dye substances are used to give colour to textiles, paper, leather, and other materials so that the colour is not easily changed by washing, heating, light, or other factors that the material may be exposed. However, the fabric dyes considerably compromise the water bodies, increase biochemical and chemical oxygen demand (BOD and COD), impair photosynthesis, inhibit plant growth, damage the food chain, offer recalcitrance and bioaccumulation, and promote recalcitrance and bioaccumulation toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. Various technologies are practised to find a suitable and economical way to remove debris from the water environment. Adsorption is one of the advanced processes and is finding its place in practise and research. Chitosan is made from chitin which is available on a large scale in a natural system. This carbohydrate polymer is gaining importance in wastewater treatment, agriculture, cosmetics and biomedical applications because of its excellent chemical properties. The high availability of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen has found a perfect place in adsorption technology. But to make the system sustainable, the practise of regeneration and reuse is being followed. Therefore, the chitosan is combined with other molecules to form composites and in the form of beads. The current chapter highlights the importance of adsorption, chitosan, and composite beads with other naturally available molecules.
