Effect of Single-Pass Large-Strain Rolling on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Al-3Li-1Cu-0.2Er-0.1Zr Alloy

Abstract

Effect of single-pass large-strain rolling (LSR) on microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-3Li-1Cu-0.2Er-0.1Zr alloy were investigated. After LSR process at 500 °C with three different reductions (66.7, 75.0, and 83.3%), the residual Cu-rich phases along the grain boundaries were broken and homogeneously distributed. Massive nano-particles of Al3Li, Al3(Er, Zr), and Al3(Er, Zr, Li) precipitated after LSR process. However, with the increase of LSR reduction, the microstructural inhomogeneity was increasingly obvious and massive recrystallized grains were gradually observed. Both strength and ductility were improved after LSR process at 500 °C. After LSR process with 75.0% reduction at three different temperatures (400, 450, and 500 °C), with the increase of LSR temperature, some fine grains were observed near the fibrous grains. Under the condition of LSR process with 75.0% reduction at 450 °C, the best mechanical properties were obtained, with the ultimate tensile strength of 348 MPa and elongation of 19.1%.
