Excerpt

The commercial road transport industry is challenged to reduce CO2 emissions from heavy-duty vehicles significantly by 2025 and 2030. One solution is the adoption of engine oils with low high temperature high shear (HTHS) viscosity, which can improve fuel efficiency without compromising engine protection. The article delves into the measurement and benefits of HTHS viscosity, highlighting how advancements in engine design and oil technology enable the formulation of lower viscosity oils. It also discusses the revised industry standards that have allowed lubricant manufacturers to develop oils with even lower HTHS viscosity, offering greater fuel efficiency and emissions reduction potential. Real-world applications and case studies are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of these oils in maintaining engine protection and extending oil drain intervals.
