Zusammenfassung

Experimente sind eine der besten Methoden, um Kausaleffekte aufzudecken. Sie werden in der sozialwissenschaftlichen Umweltforschung unter anderem angewandt, um die Wirkung von sozialen Normen für Umwelthandeln abzuschätzen sowie zentrale Faktoren zur Erklärung von Umwelteinstellungen und Präferenzen für umweltpolitische Maßnahmen zu ermitteln. Der Beitrag bietet einen Überblick über verschiedene Typen von Experimenten (Laborexperimente, Feldexperimente, multifaktorielle Umfrageexperimente und natürliche Experimente), verweist auf Anwendungsbeispiele im Umweltbereich und benennt einige kritische Problembereiche in der Experimentalforschung (mit etwaigen Lösungsansätzen). Insgesamt soll deutlich werden, dass experimentelle Ansätze einen wichtigen Bestandteil des Methodenkanons in der Umweltsoziologie bilden, der nicht nur hilft Forschungshypothesen zu testen, sondern auch die Effekte von Interventionen im Alltagsleben mit Ziel eines verbesserten Umwelt- und Klimaschutzes auszuloten.
