Transgender persons, also referred to as trans people, can be defined as persons whose gender identity is different from their sex designated at birth. According to the United Nations, trans people experience a range of serious problems including being bullied at school, experiencing rejection from their families, and possessing high rates of homelessness. Additionally, trans people, especially those of color or who are ethnic minorities, have suffered high rates of violence which include beatings, mutilation, rapes, and killings. Transgender persons also have been severely mistreated by some health-care institutions which have forced psychiatric evaluations on these individuals, performed undesired surgeries as well as sterilizations. …
