Light harvesting applications of ZnFe2O4/NiTiO3 nanocomposite through the two-step sol–gel method

Abstract

In this research, ZnFe2O4/NiTiO3 nanocomposite was successfully synthesized by two-step sol–gel method in an aqueous solution. Besides, Electrophoresis deposition (EPD) was used for the fabrication layer of ZnFe2O4/NiTiO3 nanocomposite and ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles on the fluorine doped tin oxide glass for photovoltaic measurement. According to the photovoltaic results, ZnFe2O4/NiTiO3 nanocomposite shows 6.6 times higher photovoltaic conversion efficiency (η) than ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles (0.251 vs. 0.038). Furthermore, the photocatalytic activities of ZnFe2O4/NiTiO3 nanocomposite and ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles were studied for the decolorization of methyl orange under visible light irradiation. The photocatalysis results reveal that the methyl orange decolorization percentage of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles and ZnFe2O4/NiTiO3 nanocomposite are 68 and 92%, respectively. In addition, XRD patterns indicate the as prepared ZnFe2O4/NiTiO3 nanocomposite is mixtures of cubic and rhombohedral structure. The as-synthesized products were characterized by XRD, SEM, UV–Vis, and EDS.
