Abstract

Model tests are commonly adopted to study soil liquefaction. The dynamic features of soil liquefaction problems in the field can be modelled by constructing scale models of soil deposits. Geotechnical models are usually tested using shaking tables and centrifugal devices. Shaking tables can conduct large model tests, but a centrifuge can reproduce the in situ stress level. For seismic soil liquefaction problems, centrifugal shaking table or dynamic centrifuge tests, combination of shaking tables and centrifugal devices, are widely used. Both dynamic characteristics of soil liquefaction and flow liquefaction are important for engineering safety. In this chapter, we focus on the dynamic features of soil seismic liquefaction, using centrifugal shaking tables. The principal and scaling rules of dynamic centrifuge model tests are introduced in detail. A case study of a constructed embankment subject to earthquake conditions is presented. We conclude that physical modeling is a useful method for researching the dynamic characteristics of seismic liquefaction.
