Physicochemical characterization of SnO2 grafted Poly p-phenylenediamine hybrid Nanocomposites and their enhanced antibacterial properties

Abstract

Work presented here demonstrates successful synthesis and characterization of SnO2 nanoparticle grafted poly p-phenylenediamine/SnO2 nanocomposites. Synthesis of the nanocomposites were accomplished by In situ oxidative polymerization technique using H2O2 as an oxidant. SnO2 nanoparticles were synthesised by sol–gel technique. XRD analysis confirms the amorphous to semi crystalline morphology of the composites. FT-IR spectroscopy results also confirms the incorporation of the metal oxides nanoparticles into the polymer matrix. TGA also confirms that the materials possess appreciable thermal stability. From I-V measurement, it was revealed that conductivity of the nanocomposites falls in the semiconductor region. Therefore, the nanocomposites are expected to have application in the field of optoelectronics. In addition, the polymer and the nanocomposites possess potential antibacterial properties against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli and Bacillus subtilis. The nanocomposites were showing better activity compared to the polymer. The materials developed thus can be used for fabrication of materials with antibacterial properties.
