Due to the stricter regulations of the European Union to reduce CO2 emissions from passenger cars, further improvements in the operating efficiency of gasoline engines are necessary. Increasing the compression ratio offers potential here, but requires a combustion behavior that is as knock-resistant as possible, particularly in the case of highly stressed downsizing concepts. In this context, combining the Miller cycle with water injection proves an interesting approach, which Daimler and the University of Siegen have evaluated experimentally in research projects. …
