Abstract

This chapter delves into the optimization of marshalling yards, a crucial component of freight transport. It begins by highlighting the EU's climate goals and the need for efficient, eco-friendly freight transport. The current state of marshalling yards is examined, focusing on the receiving yard where manual processes pose significant safety risks. The chapter then explores the potential of automated shunting and uncoupling technologies, detailing how these innovations can reduce manual labor and enhance safety. A proposed ergonomic interface is introduced, designed to facilitate the supervision and control of automated shunting devices. The chapter also addresses the responsibilities and information transmission requirements for such systems, ensuring compliance with safety standards. Finally, it discusses the potential benefits of automation for the workforce and the need for early involvement of professional associations in the development process.
