Entering text in a smartphone is the most frequent form of distraction for drivers on the motorway. Almost one in seven drivers are distracted while driving on the motorway and one in ten use their smartphones at the wheel. These are the results of study carried out by a team of researchers at the TU Braunschweig. They observed more than 2000 drivers on the A2 motorway in Germany. Another study carried out by the university shows a slight fall in smartphone use while driving on city streets. In 2015, the team monitored around 12,000 drivers in a number of German cities. “We noticed that the drivers’ eyes were often off the road for a surprisingly long time while they were looking at their smartphones. Many of them not only make calls, but also use apps. The result is that they are ’flying blind’ for distances of 50 to 100 m at high speeds,” explains Mark Vollrath, Professor of engineering and traffic psychology at the TU. …
