As the title indicates, this book, expertly edited by Fernando Reimers, presents a comparative study of how six nations (England, Colombia, Mexico, India, Cambodia and the United States) design and implement large-scale professional development programs for teachers to educate their students in a broad range of twenty-first century domains such as higher order cognitive skills and socio-emotional competencies. Each case represents an effort to empower teachers for deep instruction on a broad set of goals. But given the different context, each program understandably differs from others in its direction and strategies. The book identifies the various theories of action used in these programs, and examines how these theories were implemented and the outcomes achieved. …
