The breaking strength of the glass affects the pedestrian's risk of injury to the head in the event of an impact with the windshield. In the FAT project "Stochastic Fracture Behavior of Glass" (FAT publication series No. 339) scientists from Giessen University of Applied Sciences and Technical University of Darmstadt worked together with engineers from the automotive and glass industries to evaluate and estimate a concept to determine the probability of injury. They considered the stochastic strength of glass, using a combination of experimental and numerical simulations. …
