When an article is published about a material that can make objects invisible, it arouses a lot of public interest. News of a material with a negative refractive index has a similar impact on scientists. In the ATZ interview, Emanuele Merlo, Acoustic Engineer at Edag, describes the amazing properties of metamaterials.
Emanuele Merlo (born in 1982) is an acoustic engineer in the sound and acoustics department at Edag. He comes originally from Venice and studied opera singing, acquiring experience as a sound technician. In 2011, he completed his studies and moved to Germany where he worked as an opera singer for four years. In 2016, he enrolled at the University of Applied Sciences Mittweida for the course Media and Acoustical Engineering, specializing in acoustics. After a compulsory internship at Müller BBM in Munich in the field of room acoustic, he wrote his dissertation on the simulation of interior acoustics while working at Audi. In 2020, he finished his Bachelor of Engineering degree and moved to the University of Southampton (United Kingdom) to take a Master's degree in Acoustical Engineering at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research. He wrote his Master's thesis at the Fraunhofer IBP and completed it in September 2021.
