Abstract

We present data on studying the adhesive, elastic, and strength characteristics of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics based on carbon ribbons and fabrics with a copper-coated surface. Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics were manufactured by the vacuum-infusion method using an epoxy binder. The adhesion strength in a carbon-fiber—epoxy-matrix system as determined by the pull-out method was found to increase by 7–25% upon copper coating on carbon reinforcing materials. The copper coating had also a positive effect on the interlaminar shear strength, which increased by 15–60%. Metal coating of reinforcing materials had a lower effect on the elasticity modulus of the carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic.
