The Strength of Weld-Bonded Joints upon Long-Term Action of Negative Temperatures

Abstract

Results of experimental studies of the strength of adhesive and weld-bonded joints at room temperature and negative temperatures after their long-term exposure at –30 and –50°C are presented. An epoxy glue, an anaerobic adhesive sealant, an organosilicon sealant, and a hot melt adhesive based on a copolymer of ethylene with vinyl acetate are used as the adhesive materials, and samples made of steel and aluminum alloy are used as the substrates. It is found that the organosilicon sealant provides the highest strength of the weld-bonded joints at low temperatures. It is shown that common regularities are characteristic for all the types of weld-bonded joints under study: the strength at –30°C is lower than at –50°C.
