Abstract

In order to fulfil various advanced technological requirements in defence, aerospace, automotive and other industrial sectors, the use of composite materials have rapidly been increased. Machining of composite material is one of the important operations while manufacturing different engineered components. Machining of composite materials using conventional processes is extremely difficult and involves high cost due to their inherent material properties that often causes various types of damages during machining. Abrasive water jet machining (AWJM), an important non-conventional-type machining, is capable to overcome the limitations as regards to the machining of composites and therefore widely employed to machine them. This chapter provides an overview of various issues related to the machining of composites in traditional techniques followed by detailed fundamental scientific aspects of the abrasive water jet machining including material erosion mechanisms, influencing parameters that affect the abrasive water jet machining performance, etc. An experimental case study on machining of wood dust-based filler-reinforced polymer composites in abrasive water jet machining process and optimization of its process parameters via parametric analysis is presented.
