Gamma irradiation protection via flexible polypyrrole coated bismuth oxide nanocomposites

Abstract

The fabrication of a nanocomposite comprising polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polypyrrole (PPy), and bismuth oxide has been prepared using the solution casting method. The fabricated nanocomposite films were analytically characterized, in general, and for gamma irradiation shielding properties, in specific. Various gamma irradiation attenuation parameters were measured using different gamma irradiation energy sources (Co-57, Ba-133, Na-22), with the help of the Geiger Muller detector and NIST-WinXCOM database. On increasing the contents of Bi2O3 NPs in the PVA-PPy matrix, the composite’s mass attenuation coefficients were enhanced significantly, and the effectiveness of gamma irradiation shielding improved overall and particularly at gamma rays energy of 122 keV. The increasing trend of mass attenuation coefficients was observed for low gamma-ray energy sources up to 30 wt% nanofiller contents, whereas it reduced for high dose gamma energy sources like Na-22, as compared to Co-57 and Ba-133. The half-value layer (HVL) and tenth value layer (TVL) showed a decreasing trend for the low gamma-ray energy source. With a 1274 keV gamma energy source, the values of HVL and TVL steadily increased until the nanofiller incorporation reached up to 30 wt%. The values of investigated coefficients using the NIST-WinXCOM database have been found in good agreement with the experimental results. The lead-free PVA-PPy-Bi2O3 nanocomposites have shown promising shielding properties for low energy gamma irradiation and might be a good alternative for conventional radiation shielding material in nuclear medicine diagnostics and treatment centers.
