Abstract

The presence of Hg+2 in industrial wastewater is considered a big environmental problem. So the removal of Hg+2 is important target. Polymeric materials especially polyaniline and its derivatives have a unique properties. Poly(aniline-co-N-(2-hydroxyethyl) aniline) (P(ANI-co-NHEANI)) as a new sorbent for Hg+2 was synthesized by oxidative chemical polymerization of N-(2-hydroxyetyl) aniline)/aniline binary mixture. Polymerization was performed in aqueous HCl solutions using ammonium persulphate (APS) as oxidant under nitrogen atmosphere at 5 °C. The optimum conditions of the copolymerization based on copolymer yield were present. The obtained P(ANI-co-NHEANI) was characterized by IR, SEM, XRD and TGA to investigate both structure and morphology of the obtained copolymer. The efficiency of the prepared P(ANI-co-NHEANI) sample to remove Hg+2 from contaminated industrial wastewater was studied. The obtained data reveal that the synthesized P(ANI-co-NHEANI) has a good efficiency towards the removal of Hg+2 (90.9% which can be closed to 100% with increasing both time and dose), some adsorption models were applied. In addition, adsorption kinetic models were investigated. The fitting of the obtained data shows both chemical and physical adsorption of Hg+2. The remained Hg(II) was measured via Atomic Fluoresces Spectrophotometer.
