Effect of oxidant to fuel ratio on properties of yttrium doped barium cerate (BCY20)

Abstract

20 % yttrium doped barium cerate (BCY20) powder has been synthesized by cost effective solution combustion method and the effect of oxidant to fuel ratio on the structural morphological and electrical properties is reported. The phase formation and evolution is studied by using XRD. The carbonate free orthorhombic BCY20 phase is obtained for optimum oxidant to fuel ratio. The microstructure of the pellets sintered at 1573 K is examined through scanning electron microscopy and also with transmission electron microscopy. The vibrational modes are detected by Raman spectroscopy. The presence of Ba, Ce and Y is confirmed with elemental analysis. The dc conductivities of sintered pellets measured in air atmosphere at 873 K are 1.6 × 10−3, 2 × 10−3 and 1.9 × 10−3 S/cm for fuel lean, optimum and rich ratio respectively.
