Modern, efficient and emission optimised engines require combustion processes which are characterised by high peak pressure and high pressure gradients strongly exciting the engine structure and particularly the cranktrain. The torsional and bending stiffness of the crankshaft and furthermore its stiffness ratio to the main bearing structure are potential parameters influencing the combustion induced component of mechanical cranktrain noise which can lead to rough, growling or impulsive noise impressions. At AVL the effect of cranktrain design parameters on the engine NVH performance with a special focus on the crankshaft was investigated. ...
