Tribological Behavior and Corrosion Resistance of S30432 Steel after Different Shot Peening Processes

Abstract

S30432 steel was treated by different shot peening (SP) processes, including single SP, dual SP, and triple SP. Dry sliding tribological behavior and corrosion resistance of S30432 steel after different SP processes were studied by using reciprocating friction/wear tester (Al2O3 as the counterpart) and electrochemical work station, respectively. The results showed that the steady-state friction coefficient could slightly decrease after triple SP process under 5 N; the low roughness value and hardened surface were responsible for it. Compared with the original S30432 steel, the wear resistance of all shot-peened samples was enhanced under the measured loads, which was mainly attributed to the high hardness of gradient hardening layers. Comparing to the as-received crystalline material, the local corrosion resistance of refined microstructure induced by dual SP and triple SP was enhanced. However, for single SP process, the corrosion resistance deteriorated, which was mainly attributed to the variation of surface roughness. It was concluded that the appropriate SP process could improve both wear and corrosion resistance.
