Abstract

The U.S. Air Force (USAF) relies on its instructional systems development model to create efficient and effective curricula. A needs assessment was conducted for the USAF's Special Warfare Training Wing (SWTW) to select and prioritize course content for its Instructor Qualification Course (IQC). The study used the Borich model to quantify and prioritize competencies graduates of the IQC should display on the job. The Mean Weighted Discrepancy Score (MWDS) was calculated for each task, revealing areas of high training need. A steering committee validated the findings and recommended an IQC that provides broad exposure to pedagogical knowledge and skills, with on-the-job training for mastery. The study highlights the importance of stakeholder involvement and the use of data-driven approaches in instructional systems development.
