Abstract

The December 26, 2004 Sumatra earthquake of Mw 9.1 caused wide spread damage in South and South-East Asian countries. The resultant tsunami claimed an estimated 230,000 human lives, the largest ever loss of human lives in a tsunami. Extensive damage and loss of human lives occurred in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India and many other countries. This chapter includes an introduction to the earthquake and an in-depth description of the tsunami.
