Abstract

This paper proposes an index of polarization for tourism which links the axiomatic theory of Esteban and Ray with the classical hierarchical agglomerative clustering techniques. The index is aimed at analyzing the dynamics of the average length of stay across Italian destinations, and more specifically to detect whether the polarization within the set of clusters of places with similar values of the indicator has varied over time.

1
The average length of stay is calculated by dividing the nights spent by the arrivals. According to EUROSTAT (2010), a night spent (or overnight stay) is each night that a guest actually spends (sleeps or stays) or is registered (his/her physical presence there being unnecessary) in a collective accommodation establishment or in private tourism accommodation; an arrival is defined as a person who arrives at a collective accommodation establishment or at a private tourism accommodation and who checks in.

While in (1) and (2) the cluster population π i is the number of persons belonging to each group, that is the number of units over which the variable per capita income takes place, here each cluster’s size p i is the total number of the beds in official accommodation collective structures of i, which analogously are the potential ’occasions’ over which the tourists stay takes place.
