Summarising the evidence on who the audiences for livecasts are and in what ways they enjoy them, this chapter draws on research by the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts, Picturehouse Cinemas, the New York Met and the author’s own survey. Clear and unexpected patterns emerge, including that of older audiences returning to the cinema for these events, and engaging committedly and emotionally with them. The chapter shows and explores two broad kinds of response, ‘Expert’ and ‘Immersive’ orientations, which have quite opposite and indeed conflicting expectations of these events.
