Due to its importance in occupational hygiene and environmental air monitoring the problem of particle sampling has received a considerable amount of attention in the past. Although in reality all samplers are blunt, as they cause some disturbance to the airflow, a substantial amount of literature has concentrated on the idealised case of sampling through a thin-walled sampler, this is the limiting case of a blunt sampler where the walls of the sampler are assumed to be infinitely thin.
