Digital imagery has characteristic that allows it to be easily forged. If this problem cannot be alleviated, the popularization of digital imagery will be lessened. In this paper, a new image authentication technique is proposed for tamper detection and recovery. The method extracts the averages of pixel values of the blocks from the image as the verification information, and then the information is further compressed with error correction codes. Then, they are randomly embedded into the original image using a new digital watermarking technique. The experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively and securely detect and recover the modified image. In addition, it also can survive a certain degree of image processing operations. Compared with the related research, SRTPT, the proposed method obtains better results in all respects. The proposed method is therefore an effective, secure and robust tamper proofing technique.
