Input variables to the grinding process are distinguished from inputs to the grinding machine. The two important inputs to the grinding process are normal force and wheel sharpness. A quantitative measure of wheel sharpness is presented. Basic plunge-grinding relations are developed. The causes of size, taper, surface finish, and surface integrity variations are described. Adaptive controls for improving production grinding performance are discussed.
