Über dieses Buch

This book includes speeches given during five seminar sessions held in honor of Prof. C. R. Rao, on his 100th year. This book also contains a few write-ups touching on the diverse aspects of this august personality. The chapters pay tribute to Prof. C. R. Rao, the Padma Vibhushan awardee, by discussing his life and contributions to the field of statistics. The book also includes a chapter by the Abel Prize winner Prof. S. R. Varadhan who happened to successfully complete his Ph.D. under the guidance of Prof. C. R. Rao.

Information and the Accuracy Attainable in the Estimation of Statistical Parameters
Abstract
The earliest method of estimation of statistical parameters is the method of least squares due to Markoff. A set of observations whose expectations are liner of a number of unknown parameters being given the problem which Markoff posed for solution is to find out a linear function of observations whose expectation is an assigned linear function of the unknown parameters and whose variance is a minimum.

A Few Thoughts on India’s Statistical System
Abstract
I possess no expertise to write an essay on Professor C. R. Rao. I am neither a mathematician, nor a statistician. Economists need to use statistics, as do several others. Therefore, as a student of economics, I am familiar with his work on estimation, which one studied as part of course work.

A Tribute to Prof. C R Rao
Abstract
A world leader in statistical science and a living legend, Professor C R Rao holds a special place in the Indian Statistical Institute as also for me personally. Having met Prof. Rao a couple of times as a young faculty, known about his work for many years and as the Director of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), I am familiar with his achievements, immense contribution to statistics and its applications in newer areas, and his service to ISI.

The Polaron Problem
Abstract
I want to thank ISIREA for giving me this opportunity to partcipate in the year long celebrartion of Dr. Rao’s centennial. I remember fondly my years at ISI and the encouragement and support Dr. Rao provided during that period. He has always remained in touch. I take this occasion to wish him good health.

C. R. Rao: A Life in Statistics
Abstract
When I think of modern statistics, Dr C.R. Rao features on the top of the list. He once said that statistics is the technology of finding the invisible and measuring the immeasurable.

A Secure End-to-End Verifiable E-Voting System Using Zero-Knowledge Proof and Blockchain
Abstract
Conducting an election is an important and challenging task of a government to establish the democracy in the country. The constraints of conducting a secure election are remarkably strict. In the last two decades, direct-recording electronic (DRE) machines are extensively used for voting at polling stations around the world.

Glimpses from the Life and Work of Dr. C.R. Rao: A Living Legend in Statistics
Abstract
Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao (or simply Dr. Rao, as he is universally known to his students and colleagues) who attended the age of 100 on September 10, 2020, is a living legend in Statistics: His work has influenced not only has influenced the field of statistics, but also has had a profound impact on numerous other areas, such as economics, engineering, agriculture, anthropology, biometry, demography, psychology, geology, and medicine. In this article, along with some of his pioneering work, we trace a few the events of his memorable long life.

My Memorable Interactions with Professor C. R. Rao
Abstract
In this short note, I describe my memorable interactions with Professor C. R. Rao starting from my student days at the University of Bombay (1954–1956) to my stay at the Indian Statistical Institute, 1968–1969, as a visiting professor.

Further Non-subjective Priors for Wrapped Cauchy Distributions
Abstract
Wrapped Cauchy distributions are widely used for the analysis of circular data. In an earlier article, Ghosh et al. (2019), derived reference priors and quantile matching priors for parameters of wrapped Cauchy distributions. The matching priors are designed to achieve Bayes–frequentist synthesis by providing asymptotic equivalence of the coverage probabilities of Bayesian credible intervals and frequentist confidence intervals. The present article explores the matching idea further by deriving highest posterior density matching priors as well as matching priors associated with likelihood ratio statistics. In fact, the latter is related to a very important work of Professor C.R. Rao joint with Professor Rahul Mukerjee.

Aspects of Inductive Inference in Statistics and Machine Learning
Abstract
We take a brief look at some connections between the old philosophical problem of inductive inference and the modern areas of statistics and machine learning. Certain aspects of inductive inference appearing in specific techniques of the latter two areas are made explicit. Our contention is that statistics and machine learning techniques do not lead to a resolution of the problem of induction. Finally, we sketch an agenda for studying reductions between various kinds of inductive inferences.

“To the seers, our ancestors”
Abstract
C.R. Rao has been described by the American Statistical Association as
a living legend whose work has influenced not just statistics, but has had far reaching implications for fields as varied as economics, genetics, anthropology, geology, national planning, demography, biometry, and medicine.

A Tiny Tribute to a Towering Statistician
Abstract
Fully aware of the fact that I know only a little about the scholastic contributions and professional achievements of Professor Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao (popularly mentioned as C. R. Rao)—the living.
S. P. Mukherjee
Our Dr. Rao
Abstract
It was in July 1964. All the new students and scholars were to have their first class in the auditorium of the institute in the geology building. We were told that professor would take the class. The dais was decorated with scientific items.

A Tribute to Professor C. R. Rao
Abstract
A few correspondences between the author and Prof. C. R. Rao are referred to. A few research outputs by the author are mentioned.

His Experiments with Truth
Abstract
It is an honor for me to pay tribute to Prof. C R Rao (CRR), a living legend in the true sense of the term. It is indeed a rare honor to write a eulogy of a person, who at this incredible age takes less than 24 hours to reply to his emails from another continent.
Dipti Prasad Mukherjee
C. R. Rao
Abstract
In this short write-up, I give my personal opinion about Professor C.R. Rao based on evidence I gathered from the various meetings I had with him. This evidence supports my claim that the more important and prominent a person is, the more this person is down to earth.
