Casey Reas represents a new generation of artists that successfully blurs the line between design, media arts and computer science or software programming. His creative work very much exhibits this hybrid quality and his academic approach is new and fresh. Reas’s recent arrival as a new faculty member of the department of Design/Media Arts at UCLA was felt immediately with students embracing programming as a new creative language without intimidation and with great excitement at the possibilities software programming and design offers. It is clear that a new movement is emerging that takes programming outside of the screen, into the realm of wearable and mobile computing, sense environments and public spaces. A new generation that grew up on computer games has an entirely different approach to creative work and the expectations when interacting with an artwork are not at all one of passive viewing. This extends out to education in the media arts and for this reason I approached Reas to invite a group of his peers to address this issue. …
