Abstract

As China has already stepped into an aging society, it is of great importance to care more for the aging population. Compared with the speed of the aging of population, products designs for the elderly can’t meet the needs of market. Due to the change of social roles and the increase of leisure time, now the elderly can have close interaction with furniture. However, there are little furniture specially designed for the elderly and they can’t meet old people’s basic needs. Sleep is a basic psychological process which is closely related to human health. A good sleep can relieve fatigue and refresh our mind. With the increase in age, one of the many physiological changes of the elderly is the change of sleep structure. They tend to wake up easily and have less sleep which leads to the decline of efficient sleep time as well as sleep disorders under the influence of other unfavorable factors. By researching old people’s sleep disorder and its influential factors and combing the relationship of prone position with health, this paper focused on furniture used by the aging population to discuss the furniture’s influence on the quality of sleep and proposed the design direction for this kind of furniture.
