Andre Iguodala, who has played 17 NBA seasons, is a well-known swingman from the Golden State Warriors’ three championship teams. However, rather than use his memoir The Sixth Man to recount his triumphs on the basketball court, he instead takes this opportunity to present a somewhat unconventional view of the NBA by laying out in bold relief the ways in which players are often treated as commodities rather than human beings who happen to be employees. Iguodala supports his argument with anecdotal evidence from his life, mainly focusing on the themes of mental health, Black consciousness, and monetary compensation. These themes evolve as Iguodala develops from a boy who loved basketball into a professional who was compelled to view basketball as a business. …
