Applicability of ecological benthic health evaluation tools to three subtropical estuaries (Azini, Jask and Khalasi) from the Iranian coastal waters

Abstract

Classification schemes and ecological evaluation tools based on benthic macrofauna data were applied to the Azini, Jask and Khalasi estuaries. Changes in benthic community structure were investigated using multivariate (MDS and CCA) and univariate analyses (diversity indices and BENTIX). BENTIX indices were applied to the available benthic species data and the succession of the ecological groups. The ANOSIM tests, applied to assess the significance of ecological segregation, confirmed that there was a significant difference in the structure of the assemblages among estuaries for all seasons (Global R > 0.5, P > 0.001). According to results of the BENTIX indices, a significant difference was observed between the Khalasi estuary (as the reference condition) with the Jask and Azini estuaries with regard to BENTIX values. The ecological quality status of the disturbed stations was worse than that of references. Thus, BENTIX indices appeared to work successfully in soft bottom substrates in these subtropical areas.
